A busy Logan City intersection is set to receive a $2 million safety upgrade, with construction starting in just a few months.

Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman announced the Waterford–Tamborine Road (Kingston Road) and Nerang Street intersection at Waterford  upgrade.

Ms Fentiman said the project would improve safety for all road users at the busy intersection.

“We know our busy Logan community is growing fast,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Kingston Road is currently experiencing high levels of congestion during peak hours between Loganlea Road and Nerang Street.

“These upgrades to the intersection will allow for increased traffic numbers, as well as make it more user friendly for pedestrians with the addition of new footpaths.”

Bethania resident Sharon Robertson welcomed the improvements to the intersection which she said is a known congestion hotspot.

“It is such a busy area and these changes will make it so much safer, especially at school times,” she said.

Ms Fentiman said additional capacity for vehicles turning into Nerang Street from Brisbane Beenleigh Road has been needed to lessen the impact on other commuters traveling through the intersection.

“The works will include an additional right-turn lane which will help alleviate the demand and congestion currently experienced by motorists, as well as safety upgrades such as additional street lighting, safety cameras and signage,” she said.

“This will be welcomed by local commuters as well as businesses such as the nearby White House of Waterford.

“Design has been completed, with construction currently scheduled for mid-2021.”

RoadTek has been appointed to construct the project that will begin in mid- 2021 and will continue until late-2021 (weather and construction conditions permitting.

The upgrade will provide an additional right turn lane from Kingston Road into Nerang Street.

Nerang Street will also be widened to accommodate an additional right turn lane and changes to the left turn lane from Kingston Road into Nerang Street will also be made.

The roadworks will involve:

• earthworks and pavements
• street lighting and traffic cameras • signage
• landscaping
• linemarking
• concrete footpaths

What locals can expect when construction begins:

• Construction between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. Some nightwork or weekend work may be required.
• Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, short-term traffic stoppages and temporary lane closures.
• Reduced speed limit even if workers are not visible due to the changed traffic conditions of the road.
• Wet weather, contractor availability and site conditions may change the work schedule.
• Construction traffic entering and exiting work areas and site offices.
• Changes to some property accesses.
Every effort will be made to minimise construction impacts where possible.

Funding for the project is through the Safer Roads Sooner program which aims to deliver high benefit, cost-effective road engineering treatments to address known high-risk crash hot spots on the state’s road network.
