Bravehearts founder explains why she’s stepping down

  • Rod Stephen is a former television journalist and has worked as Foreign Editor for the Seven Network, Australian Bureau Chief for TV3 New Zealand, UK correspondent for Seven and ABC radio and as a producer for Reuters TV in London as well as SBS in Sydney and Melbourne before returning to Brisbane to work at 4BC.

The Logan City founder of the Bravehearts organisation, Hetty Johnston has spoken out about why she is stepping down from the group at the end of the year.

The highly regarded child protection advocate says after 25 years it’s time for the group to change direction and focus on service delivery rather than advocacy.

“And it is necessary I think to focus on the service delivery. The advocacy work that I do makes fund raising, particularly from government’s, incredibly difficult because they don’t like to feed the mouth that bites them”.

Ms Johnston said her decision to leave Bravehearts has been planned for a long time.

“We’ve been working on a succession plan at Bravehearts for a number of years, actually, many years, trying to find the right C.E.O. to take over the role and we’ve achieved that”. You know it’s a good day. The organisation is full of great people doing great work. It’s calm, it’s settled – the leadership is strong”

She adds that she doesn’t think she will be going back into politics or continuing her work as a child protection advocate in the future.

But before she makes up her mind Ms Johnston intends to have a break and relax for a while.
