Logan Library & KRANK activities for school holidays

If you’re looking for activities to keep the kids entertained this school holiday, Logan Libraries has the answer, and it’s all online and free.

The programme, STEM Punks, gives kids the opportunity to explore a range of online free STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activities, including becoming an amateur pet detective or undertaking a dark sky data mapping exercise.

The online programme for kids aged eight and over, offers the chance to gain new skills in 3D mapping, coding and design, with the online CSI detective activity involving finding a lost pet using forensic science during three sessions that can be accessed over seven days.

Another activity helps kids discover how they can help create a dark sky within their home, city or town through 3D technologies, by creating their own light sensor to monitor the dark sky, learn how light pollution affects humans and animals and then create their own 3D data map.

Kids will need a laptop or desktop PC (or Mac) to access the activities via Google Chrome browser.

Pest Fishing Cup

Logan City Council’s annual Pest Fishing Cup in Demelo Park, Berrinba will be happening Saturday 10th with a host of prizes on offer for winners.

Not only is it one of South East Queensland’s biggest fishing events, but it actually helps clear waterways and wetlands of Carp and Tilapia, an official pest that was introduced to Australia in the 1970’s

Despite registrations being closed, visitors wanting to watch the event are very welcome – as long as COVID safety restrictions are followed.

The  event is being delivered under the Scrubby Creek Implementation Plan and promotes the practice of responsible fishing and educates the community on pest fish and how to improve our waterways.

Working in partnership with the local fish stocking association, the Freshwater Fishing & Stocking Association of Queensland, as well as sponsors OzFish and Alvey Reels, the event will also be hosting wildlife and fish experts giving demonstrations and talks.
