On the second day of Queensland’s Road Safety Awareness Week Logan City Mayor Darren Power is calling for a crackdown on drink and drug driving as the road toll in the city continues to escalate.
Twelve people have been killed on the region’s road this year, just four short of last year’s toll.
Mayor Power believes more needs to be done to catch drink and drug drivers.
The Fatal Five – speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, drug and drink driving, distracted driving and fatigue – were the cause of most accidents in Logan C.
Mayor Power adds a good friend of his died in a car accident.
Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane echoed the Mayor’s call for better driver behaviour.
“The many challenges of the past year appear to have impacted some people’s driving skills and on-road capabilities and the time has come to call out poor driving behaviours,” Cr Lane says
Queenslanders are being asked to create a sign with their road safety message and share it on social media using #QRSW2021 or by tagging @StreetSmartsQLD.
Council demonstrates its commitment to lowering the road toll through the SafeRoads4Logan partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health and the RACQ.
SafeRoads4Logan drives initiatives such as portable speed advisory signs, driver education and adopting safe road designs.
