Wellcamp COVID-19 quarantine hub to be built

The Queensland Government has announced it will build a COVID-19 quarantine hub near Toowoomba.

The Darling Downs facility is expected to be up and running by the end of the year after the government struck an agreement with Wellcamp Airport owner John Wagner.

Qld Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she’s been pushing for the hub since January.

The first 500 rooms are expected to be constructed in just six weeks.

The proposal courted plenty of controversy,  with a campaign against the facility supported by prominent Toowoomba developer Clive Berghofer.

Despite a petition submitted to the State Government netting thousands of signatures, it stood firm on the concept.

The Commonwealth is already building another facility at Pikenba near Brisbane Airport which will be state run.
