Logan City business welcomes border reopening

A Logan City company is delighted for local business and the community that the Queensland border is open, commending the state government for making sure that this has been achieved with a ‘safety first’ approach.

The border reopened at 1am today (Tuesday) to all of New South Wales and Victoria after months of closure due to the global pandemic.

InvestLogan hopes that it can remain open, where safe, to provide continuity for businesses going forward.

InvestLogan acting CEO Medy Hassan said the city needs to be able to attract people to Logan, while locals also need to, and are enthusiastic about, having the option to work across the border and returning again.

“It’s all exciting now that we do have the border open, but there are caveats around that and of course if there’s a hotspot that’s created, the opportunity for the border to stay open will probably contract again and may need to close very rapidly,” said Hassan.

“I hope it’s about having some level of confidence around the border being open so that if you’re  engaging in workers coming to Logan to do work or generating work, it’s important to have a line of sight beyond the short-term – that’s the ideal.

“Logan is a fantastic community. It’s a community which can generate its own prosperity and it’s also good to have a measure of certainty to allow people to be confident about coming in and continuing to engage within Logan.”

As far as 2021 and beyond is concerned, Hassan believes that despite the challenges 2020 has brought, including bushfires and the coronavirus, businesses and individuals alike should be confident about investment opportunities in the city.

“I think the economic stimulus being supported by several levels of government such as the infrastructure spend, the promotion of tourism and hospitality and now with the border reopening, it’s starting to generate some real confidence,” continued Hassan.

“I don’t think we’re going to see the norm again, but I think we will reset our expectations accordingly. We are super resilient in Logan.

“We’re not coming at it at such a low base now. I think we’ve adjusted our expectations to a point where we understand what we need to do to progress.”
