Share the Dignity, a charity helping women and girls in need, is asking for help to make this Christmas special for Logan City women experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or living in poverty.
The charity is hosting its annual It’s in the Bag campaign and would love for Logan City locals to donate a bag at any Logan City Bunnings store, between Friday November 20 and Sunday November 29.
In 2019 Share the Dignity collected over 127,000 bags at Bunnings stores across Australia.
Share the Dignity works with over 2,600 charities and this year the request for help is currently sitting at over 100,000.
2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians, due to the impacts of COVID-19. Statistics show the issues of poverty and homelessness are significant here in Australia.
According to the Analysis and Policy Observatory 3.24 million people in Australia were living below the poverty line, as of February this year.
Logan City local and Share the Dignity volunteer Kim Watson said she was proud to be a part of the campaign and do her part, after suffering through being homeless once herself.
“I’ve been volunteering with Share the Dignity for three years now,” she said.
“I know what it’s like to be homeless….and now it’s my turn to give back.
“Especially with the pandemic and everything that’s happened there’s local families that have been doing it really tough.
“It’s great to see the end product and go along when the bags are handed out to women and girls at local charities.
“You can just see how much it means to them.”
Underwood Bunnings Complex Manager Dean Nantes said his Logan City team was looking forward to supporting Share the Dignity again this year.
“Our customers love getting involved with the It’s in the Bag campaign and we are proud to provide an easy and convenient way for them to donate to such an important cause,” he said.
The It’s in the Bag campaign has a simple premise and is easy to take part in:
• Donate a handbag in good, used condition that you no longer use or a new one;
• Fill it with items that will make a difference to the daily life of a woman or girl in need;
• Include the essentials such as period products, roll-on deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner and soap;
• Add little luxuries such as a new lipstick, a hairbrush, hair ties, a gift card or a notebook and pen. It’s all about choosing what you think will make the recipient feel special and thought of at Christmas
• Add a finishing touch to the bag such as a thoughtful note or Christmas card that shows someone cares
Once bags are complete, they can be dropped off to the collection box at any Logan City Bunnings store.
Share the Dignity volunteers will then collect the bags and distribute these to registered charities ensuring that these wonderful gifts are received in time for Christmas.
Rebel 90.5 and Breeze 92.1 are also on board to help Logan City women in need through the Share the Dignity campaign (hyperlink – https://mynewsfeed.com.au/share-the-dignity/ ).
Rebel FM and the Breeze General Manager, Cheryl Jowitt said this is a small way we can all help break the cycle of homelessness and helplessness.
“We all have backpacks and handbags in the back of our wardrobes that we have no need for anymore,” she said.
“These filled with everyday items that most of us take for granted, can really make a difference to a woman and her children that are going through tough times.”
If you live in Logan City and have a group donation, the Breeze and Rebel will happily collect and donate on your behalf.
