Logan police remind tradies to secure tools to prevent theft

The Logan District Crime Prevention Team is reminding tradies to take steps to secure their tools to prevent theft.

Most tradies keep their tools in a toolbox that is located on the back of a utility style vehicle. Due to tools being easily sold on, offenders often target tradies’ tools being stored on their utes.

Some tools of the trade can cost thousands of dollars and are so often kept and stored on the back of a ute, with minimal security measures.

Logan District Officer, Acting Chief Superintendent Melissa Adams said tools on the back of utes present easy opportunities for opportunistic offenders.

“Offenders do target tradies’ utes, stealing tools from the tray, as they are considered soft or easy targets,” Chief Superintendent Adams said.

Here are some security tips to consider implementing if you’re a tradie who has a toolbox on your ute or just a toolbox with plenty of expensive tools inside:

  • Consider an alarm on your toolbox
  • Use lockable toolboxes
  • Park your vehicle in well-lit areas
  • Install CCTV at the residence where the vehicle is parked most
  • Record ALL your tools serial numbers

If your tools are stolen, police use these numbers to prevent offenders selling them onto second-hand stores. It also allows police to match your tools back with the owner if they’re found.

You may also like to consider using apps that can record your tools serial numbers and even hold pictures of them.

Police encourage all tradies to consider security options available to them, to keep their tools of trade safe.
