Man charged with murder after fatal stabbing in Ipswich

A residential altercation in Ipswich has ended in tragedy, with a 63-year-old man stabbed to death and a younger man now facing murder charges in what investigators are still working to fully understand.

The incident unfolded on Saturday night at a unit on Mine Street in Redbank, when police received a call shortly after 10 pm reporting serious injuries. Officers arrived to find a 63-year-old Riverview man with multiple stab wounds to his face and head. Despite immediate treatment from paramedics at the scene, he died during transport to hospital.

A 28-year-old Boronia Heights man was found at the unit and taken into police custody. Police allege that an altercation between the two men, who knew each other, escalated to the point where the younger man stabbed the older victim repeatedly. However, the exact nature of their relationship—and what sparked the violence—remains unclear to investigators working the case.

Detective Inspector David Briese described the scene to reporters as deeply confronting. He noted significant wounds to the deceased and substantial blood loss, with the incident having unfolded rapidly inside the confined residential space.

Three other people were inside the unit at the time of the altercation. A 30-year-old woman and her four-year-old son were present as the violence occurred. Police allege that during the incident, the 28-year-old man threatened to kill the woman, suggesting the violence extended beyond the two men and creating a dangerous environment for the child who was also present.

Evidence recovered from the unit included a large knife that police believe was used in the attack, and methamphetamine. The presence of drugs at the scene introduces another potential factor in the investigation. Police are working to determine whether substance use escalated the confrontation or played any role in triggering the fatal violence.

The 28-year-old man has been charged with one count each of murder, threatening violence, and drug possession. He appeared before Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday to face these charges.
