Stolen Truck Rams Police Cars in Toowoomba, Four Officers Injured

A stolen truck deliberately rammed into police vehicles in a violent roadside confrontation near Toowoomba, leaving four officers injured and prompting an immediate arrest after an attempted intercept spiralled into a multi-vehicle collision.

The incident began overnight when a truck was stolen from an Oakey tyre shop. Queensland Police Service received reports of the theft and initiated surveillance operations to locate the vehicle.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers conducting patrols spotted the stolen truck on Goombungee Meringandan Road at Meringandan, approximately 20 kilometres north of Toowoomba. At around 1:30pm, they made the decision to intercept the vehicle, unaware of the violent response they would encounter.

What happened next was a collision cascade. Rather than pulling over when police signalled him to stop, the truck's driver accelerated and deliberately rammed the first police car. The impact was severe and immediate—two officers in that vehicle sustained serious injuries from the deliberate impact.

The consequences were grave. One officer was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, where medical staff treated serious injuries including a fractured pelvis and internal bleeding—trauma requiring the facilities available only in the state capital. His colleague was transported by road to St Vincent's Hospital in Toowoomba. Both officers required immediate hospitalisation for injuries sustained in the collision.

But the confrontation did not end there. The truck continued driving erratically, striking a second police vehicle and leaving two additional officers injured. While these injuries were assessed as minor compared to the first impact, they added to the mounting toll of the afternoon's violence. A third police car also sustained significant damage in the cascade of collisions.

The driver's rampage ended when the truck finally came to rest in Kleinton, a small locality nearby. At that point, police were able to bring the situation under control and apprehend the driver at the scene.

The man driving the stolen truck—the sole occupant of the vehicle—was arrested immediately. He faces charges related to the theft of the vehicle and assaults on police officers. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led him to use the truck as a weapon against officers attempting to stop him.

The incident highlighted the unpredictable dangers Queensland police face during routine traffic operations. Officers responding to a stolen vehicle report encountered a driver willing to ram patrol cars rather than comply with an intercept. The rapid escalation from a standard vehicle stop to violent multi-car collisions resulted in hospitalised officers and damaged police vehicles.

Queensland Police Service confirmed the sequence of events and praised the officers involved for their professionalism in managing a chaotic and dangerous situation. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
