Two men charged over 45-minute torture attack

A 45-minute sustained assault in a Surfers Paradise apartment has hospitalised a Gold Coast woman and resulted in serious charges against two men, including torture. The duration and deliberate nature of the alleged attack distinguishes it as an unusually severe case of interpersonal violence.

The 34-year-old woman was allegedly attacked on Friday morning in a unit at Trickett Street in the heart of Surfers Paradise. During the prolonged violence, police allege she was repeatedly beaten with a hammer, slashed with a knife to her legs and had chunks of her hair cut away with a multi-tool. According to the accounts, the attackers deliberately inflicted multiple forms of injury over the extended timeframe.

The woman's ability to escape proved critical in ending the assault. She fled to a nearby hotel and alerted staff to the incident, prompting emergency services to respond. Police officers who attended found her with a significant laceration to her leg and head injuries. She was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition—a positive indicator for recovery prospects, though the visible wounds required urgent medical assessment and treatment.

Officers moved swiftly to apprehend the suspected attackers. A 36-year-old man from Mareeba and a 40-year-old from Surfers Paradise were arrested at a nearby unit complex within hours and taken into custody for questioning by detectives. Crucially, both men were known to the victim, a detail that may inform investigations into the motives and circumstances underlying the alleged violence.

Each man has been charged with one count of torture, one count of wounding, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of deprivation of liberty.
