National Volunteer Week begins today celebrating the commendable efforts of volunteers across the sunshine state with the Queensland Volunteering Awards as the premier event of the week.
A year that saw our communities tested to their limits has proven that Queenslanders are not only resilient and selfless, but that they’ll stop at nothing to help their communities to recover, keep going, and flourish.
The Queensland Volunteering Awards received over 200 nominations statewide across 6 categories:
- Volunteer of the Year Award
- Youth Volunteering Award
- Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award
- Excellence in Volunteer Management Award
- Volunteering Impact Award
- Corporate Volunteering Award
With too many to list, among them were – disadvantaged youth learn to drive programs, sea life conservation, cancer treatment patient transport, surf lifesaving programs, immigrant services; assisting newly arrived community members to integrate and feel welcomed, boxing and other sporting programs allowing young people to become engaged in their communities, and many more.
Rikki Anderson is the Senior Services Manager at Volunteering Queensland. She says two Logan City volunteers have been nominated for their exceptional service, loyalty and commitment. For privacy reasons, their full names have not been disclosed.
“Linda who volunteers at an aged care facility has been there for five years
“We’ve also got Ed who volunteers with the PCYC since 2013”.
She goes on to say that today the organisation is releasing the first ever “State of Volunteering in Queensland” report.
“The report shows over three million Queenslanders volunteer – giving their time to help”.
