Two South-East Queensland prawn farms have returned positive tests for White-Spot disease.
It’s been more than 3 years since White-Spot was first found – forcing Logan area prawn farms to shut for atleast 18 months.
Biosecurity Queensland says it was hopeful that the disease had died out and the region was just months away from obtaining proof of freedom – that is, two years of consecutive negative results for white spot.
When it was found in 2016 seven prawn farms were closed down and strict biosecurity regulations introduced at farms and for commercial and amateur fishers.
It was thought the disease, rife in Asia, was introduced to local waters through amateur fishermen using imported supermarket seafood as bait.
Biosecurity Queensland staff will meet with members of the Aquatic Consultative Committee on Emergency Animal Disease to figure out their next move.
The disease poses NO THREAT to human health.
