Winners of Light Up Logan 2020 announced

  • Jessica Arellano is a news and feature journalist from the Gold Coast. She has many years experience working within the media industry both in Australia and abroad.

The time has arrived for the winners of the Light Up Logan competition to be announced.

The competition, run by My News Feed, Rebel 90.5 FM and the Breeze 92.1 FM, has encouraged Logan City residents to decorate their home or business in an array of dazzling Christmas lights, festive inflatables or sparkling Santa statues in the hopes of winning the $1,000 prize up for grabs in the three categories: residential, acreage and business.

My News Feed editor Scott Mayman is happy to see that the competition has brought some smiles to the community following a tough 2020.

“After such an horrific year for so many people, it’s great to see some joy with so many great entries,” Mr Mayman said. “The common thread was how these Christmas lights put a smile on the faces of children. How good is that!”

During the course of the competition, some incredible Christmas light displays have been entered, and the public has voted for the winners of each category.

The ‘Residential’ category winner is Lisa Hunt from Hillcrest.

Ms Hunt says her family are very proud to be one of the Light Up Logan winners for 2020.

“We put a lot of effort into our display, and tried to make it more interactive and exciting with the photobooth and snow additions,” Ms Hunt said. “We spent a lot of money on new decorations this year, so the prize money will go towards the power bill to pay for our many thousands of lights, and of course buying a bigger and better display for next year! We are already planning for 2021.

“Thank you to all of the sponsors and for allowing us to be part of your fantastic local competition and we look forward to seeing you all again next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”

The winner for the ‘Acreage’ category is Brendan Pratt from Jimboomba.

After learning of his win in the ‘Acreage’ category, Mr Pratt said he was in disbelief of the win, but was very grateful.

“It has been so great to go down to the road to meet and greet all the people who come from various places, and to see their faces full of happiness as they view my lights to music,” Mr Pratt. “To see the children amazed at the display, and how excited they are when they see the Bluey lights sequence, where they are dancing and jumping up and down, having an absolute blast, it really makes all the work worthwhile.”

“This prize is going to be put right back into my next year’s display to try and bring more happiness and joy to everyone who wants to drop by to see them. With all the stress and unhappiness of 2020, I hope my display has given everyone something to smile about this year.”

Winner of the ‘Business’ category is Regents Park Laundromat.

Megan Mahoney from Regents Park Laundromat was ecstatic to receive the phone call about the win for best Christmas light display in the ‘Business’ category.

“I’m so appreciative,” Ms Mahoney. “I have never entered a competition before, but you sure have made Christmas magical for me, and I will be donating the money back into the community in the area.

“I’m so grateful to be part of this, thank you again.”
