MP for Macalister Melissa McMahon has allocated $1.5 million to widen Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd.

The one-lane dual road is the main route between Logan and Redland Bay. It also passes the up and coming Shoreline housing estate currently being built to house 10,000 people.

MP McMahon made the announcement via her Facebook page yesterday (Thursday, September 24).

“One of the biggest choke points here on Beenleigh-Redland Rd is the two lanes between California Creek Rd and Mount Cotton Rd,” she said.

“I can lock in that funding has been allocated to get the process underway to widen this to four lanes.

“This is great news for our commuters.

“This commitment is on top of the amazing roadworks already happening and planned for Beenleigh-Redland Bay Rd. That’s the $4.35 million Kruger Rd upgrade and the $19 million worth of road safety upgrades between California Creek Rd and Rocky Passage Rd.

“We are getting on and getting the job done to get you home sooner.”

Melissa McMahon said this funding would pay for surveyors, engineers, bridge builders and community engagement officers to work together to design a new road, and stage it out.

“If we’re gonna build a multi-million dollar road we like to do a bit of planning before a shovel hits the ground,” she said.

Planning will happen while upgrades get underway  including:

  • Improved line marking and signs, removing roadside hazards, pedestrian paths and high- friction surface treatments between California Creek Road and Mount Cotton Road, Cornubia;
  • Improved line marking and signs, removing roadside hazards, pedestrian paths and safety barriers between Mount Cotton Road and Serpentine Creek, Carbrook; and
  • Dedicated right turn lanes to: o Calvary Christian College o The Wirunya Aged Care and Retirement facilities o Ferry Road o Aquatic Gardens Caravan Park o Rocky Passage Road

Member for Springwood Mick de Brenni said plans for the duplication would also include a new two-lane bridge over California Creek plus upgrades to pedestrian and bike riding paths and facilities.

Independent Candidate for Macalister Paul Taylor has pushed back against the funding announcement via Facebook and said it has only happened because of the upcoming election.

Melissa McMahon has been in office since Nov 2017 and has only just brought it up,” he said.
