Staycation message getting through

It looks as though the message about staycations has been getting through to folks in Logan City and the Scenic Rim as they’ve been supporting the state’s tourism industry.

Tourism Research Australia released data Wednesday showing that Queenslanders spent $270 million more than they did a year ago on local holidays. That’s an increase of almost 10%.

Overall, $2.7 billion was spent in the September quarter.

The tourism industry in this country has been hit hard by the global pandemic, which has seen a huge drop in the number of tourists from overseas visiting due to the federal government’s international border closures and restrictions on the number of people allowed into Australia.

As a consequence, the tourism industry is asking the federal government to extend JobKeeper payments for people who work in the industry.
