Logan City Council has developed a long-term strategy that aims to reduce serious traffic accidents.
The SafeRoads4Logan Road Safety Strategy 2022-26 provides a blueprint for Council, its road safety partners and the community to work towards preventing the 300 serious crashes that occur annually in the City of Logan.
Infrastructure Chair Councilor Teresa Lane says the road toll has a huge social and economic cost.
“Behind every statistic is a terrible tragedy and the truth is most crashes are preventable.”
“That’s why the Council is taking a proactive approach to lowering our road toll by reducing unsafe behaviour.”
“We’ll achieve that aim by continuing to adopt the key learnings from the previous strategy and using an evidence-based approach to identify areas of road safety that need improvement.”
The strategy identifies seven priority areas for SafeRoads4Logan.
- Education, encouragement and advocacy
- Crash investigation and prevention
- Pedestrian enabling facilities
- On and off-road cycle facilities
- Speed management measures
- Focus on engineering treatments
- Monitoring and reporting
Cr Lane says the SafeRoads4Logan Road Safety Strategy 2022-26 is a proactive community-focused initiative by Council.
“But we can’t do it alone, we need your help.”
“Four major factors keep popping up in Logan crash statistics – drink driving, inexperienced young drivers, motorcyclists and not driving to the conditions.”
“The strategy will explore opportunities to educate vulnerable road-user groups such as young men, motorcyclists and pedestrians and adopt road design and speed management strategies to reduce the incidence of serious crashes.”
Fifteen people lost their lives on the city’s roads last year with 13 of the victims male. Four people have died so far this year, all were motorcyclists.
SafeRoads4Logan is a partnership between Logan City Council, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health and RACQ.
