If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint Logan City Council has you covered, with their new Green waste bins.
The optional fortnightly service is part of Logan City Council’s new waste and recycling contract with Cleanaway, which starts on July 1 next year.
The cost of the green bin waste service is less than $1 a week for a 240-litre bin option – the same size as red-top general waste (some older bins have green or grey lids) and yellow-top recycling bins.
Residents can choose to have either a 140-litre bin ($46 per year), a 240-litre bin ($51 per year) or a 360-litre bin ($76 per year). A maximum of two green waste bins per property is permitted.
The lime-top bins can be filled with garden waste such as prunings, palm fronds, weeds, leaves, and grass clippings which will be recycled into compost.
Soil and rocks should not be put into green waste bins.
Logan City Council Mayor Darren Power urged residents and businesses to embrace the new service.
“This fortnightly service will save countless trips to the tip and is ideal for those who don’t have access to a ute or a trailer to get rid of their green waste,” Mayor Power said.
The bins will be available to most domestic and commercial properties (including rental properties) for a minimum 12-month term.
Chair of the Planning, Economic Development and Environment Committee, Councillor Jon Raven, said residents wanting a new green waste bin should notify Council as soon as possible to ensure sufficient bins and collection trucks are available ahead of next year’s rollout.
“We expect many of our green-thumbed residents to register their interest in this exciting new service,” Cr Raven said.
“Council will contact those interested residents in the New Year to organise registration and bin delivery.”
Green waste bins will be collected on alternate weeks to yellow recycling bins.
The introduction of new green waste bins will have no impact on existing waste and recycling collections.
