La Nina poses higher risk of flooding in Logan City, Scenic Rim

We’re being encouraged to get prepared for a wetter than normal spring and summer with the Bureau of Meteorology keeping tabs on a La Nina that has developed in the tropical Pacific.

Meteorologist Kimba Wong said íf we do get one, places like Logan City and the Scenic Rim could really feel the effects of flooding, the result of an increased number of cyclones off the east coast which is a telltale condition of La Nina.

“Generally what La Nina conditions give us in Queensland is potentially a wetter wet season than what we would normally have,” said Wong.

“That stronger rainfall is generally during spring and early summer just because summer is Queensland’s typically wettest time of the year anyway.

“With the chance of above median rainfall for the wet season, we have a higher risk of widespread flooding.”

Wong goes on to say that there is also the risk of more than the average number of cyclones, but hopefully that might also translate into a lesser fire risk as we head towards the end of the year.
