Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing waste and recycling performance has worsened across the country appears to contradict local experience in Logan City.
The Bureau’s stats show that since 2016-17, Australia’s recycling rate for plastics has dropped from an already unacceptably low 12% down to 9%.
Total waste has risen 10% from 68 million tonnes per annum to a record 76 million tonnes, while hazardous waste climbed by 23%.
However, experience at the Logan recycling market at Browns Plains Waste & Recycling facility at Heritage Park tends to portray a different picture.
According to a Logan City Council spokesperson, “the volume of recycled materials coming into the market remained high, which is the norm there.”
