Be safe not sorry this New Year’s Eve

The RACQ is reminding Logan revelers to be safe and plan ahead this New Year’s Eve as millions of Queenslanders prepare to celebrate with friends and family.

Club spokesperson Kate Leonard-Jones says now that COVID-19 restrictions have eased, and borders have reopened, party precincts will be packed.

“We know tens of thousands of people will be heading out to watch fireworks displays and ring
in the New Year, however we ask partygoers to plan how they’ll get to and from their
destinations safely.”

“If you’re going to have a few drinks, put the effort in ahead of time to map out your journey.”

“All modes of public transport will be free from 8pm on  December 31 until 5:30am on New Year’s Day across south east Queensland, including Logan, and there’ll be additional bus and train services available.”

“For those heading to the South Bank precinct in Brisbane for the fireworks, there’ll also be rail line closures to keep in mind when planning your journey due to Cross River Rail works.”

“And remember, face masks are mandatory on public transport and in rideshare and taxi services in Queensland.”

Ms Leonard-Jones urges those planning on drinking, to leave the car at home.

“On average 50 people are killed and more than 550 are seriously injured each year on
Queensland roads as a result of drink driving and the last thing we want is to end what has
been an horrific year on our roads.”

“Wherever you are in Queensland, please check for road closures online before you set off and
always work out how you’re going to get home or have a backup plan to stay at a friend’s place.”

“The safety message applies to all road users, whether it be e-scooter riders, cyclists or pedestrians, please plan ahead and make good decisions – not ones that could cost you or someone else their life.”
