Logan City ratepayers will be forking out an extra $200,000 for 13 new council advisors, however when invited to share how this will be a positive move for the community, council declined to comment.
Opposition Local Government spokesperson Ann Leahy said while $200,000 a year was a ‘modest’ expense for council advisors, it is council’s responsibility to keep ratepayers informed.
“Local governance is permitted to appoint council advisors as required,” Ms Leahy said.
“If we are looking at an amount of $200,000….in comparison to what is spent by state members of parliament it would appear to be a relatively modest expenditure.”
MyNewsFeed reached out to Logan City Council to explain how this decision could benefit the community, take the load off of councillors to make their jobs more manageable, and be a good use of hard-earned ratepayer money.
Logan City Council declined to comment.
Ms Leahy said the decision could potentially be in Logan City resident’s best interest, but it’s hard for the community to understand this without comment from Council.
“Logan has a growing population and you have to look after those people and they need services in their area,” she said.
“The councillors need to make sure they are achieving good outcomes for Logan’s growing population.”
Ms Leahy said at the end of the day it doesn’t matter how good of a decision it was if Council is not informing ratepayers why their money is being spent.
“If a Council makes a decision to spend ratepayers money then they need to be able to demonstrate to their constituents that it is a good investment,” she said.
“It’s not the councillors’ money.
“It’s the ratepayers money.”
