Do you know a young Logan City hero?

This year’s Logan young citizen of the year winner said she wants to encourage other young Logan residents to step outside their comfort zone and make the effort to give back to their community.

Gabby Crotty, 18 years old, won the award at the Australia Day awards ceremony back in January.

Gabby, who is passionate about charity work, was recognised for her efforts with St Vincent de Paul, as well as organising a successful anti-bullying campaign for local youth.

High school teacher Linda Carroll, who nominated Gabby, said she was an “amazing young woman” who deserved to be noticed.

Nominations for the 2021 City of Logan Australia Day Awards opened on Monday, October 26.

The Logan City Young Citizen of the Year Award is open to those under 27 who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.

Gabby said anyone with a young achiever in mind should nominate them.

“I 100 per cent recommend nominating for Young Citizen of the Year,” she said.

“The opportunities, the doors it will open, if you don’t nominate, you can’t seize any of those opportunities.

“And there are so many young people in Logan City who are super involved in the community. Whether it be through volunteering or sports or something else.

“If you know someone who is really involved around Logan then you should nominate them.”

Gabby said she started volunteering when she was just 14 years old.

“I was being bullied pretty badly at school and turned to volunteering as a positive outlet,” she said.

“It’s been great and I’ve gotten a lot from it.

“I made lots of friends too.

“Because of covid I haven’t been able to volunteer as much as I would have liked this year but I plan to keep volunteering. I can’t really see myself not doing it.”

When she isn’t volunteering in Logan City Gabby is studying to be a primary school teacher, working in after school care, working at McDonalds, spending time with family, or going to the gym.
“Volunteering keeps me pretty busy along with my study and work,” she said.

“I would recommend everyone should try taking up a volunteer position locally if they can spare the time.”

Logan City Mayor Darren Power said the award, which is presented alongside the City’s annual Citizen of the Year Award each Australia Day, was designed to encourage and recognise selfless Logan City youth.

“There are so many community-minded young people in Logan who go above and beyond for others, often while also trying to kick-start dreams of their own,” Councillor Power said.

“I want to encourage those in Logan who know a charitable young person, to get in contact with Council, and tell us their story.”

Nominations for the City of Logan Australia Day Awards close on December 7. For more information on the awards, or to nominate, click here.
