Extensive survey of Eagleby Wetlands

A local environment group is set to survey the Eagleby Wetlands this week for small animals, or what are known as micro-fauna, to get a better idea of which species utilise the area.

Eagleby Community & Wetlands group chairperson Marilyn Goodwin told MyNewsFeed the wetlands are home to hundreds of species of birds, which makes them one of the world’s most significant areas so they shouldn’t have a planned road built through them.

“We absolutely believe that the present course of the planned road is inappropriate, too expensive and not fit for purpose,” said Ms Goodwin.

“Our current aim is to get this route off the map, to have it degazetted, which is something that can be done through parliament.”

The Eagleby Community & Wetlands group has lobbied since 2019 to stop the proposed Coomera Connector, which is planned to go through the suburb.

Ms Goodwin added that during the course of the last two years, they have found that the complex tidal floodplain wetlands of Eagleby are unique and very special and play an important role with the fauna, animals and birds that are found in the area.

“We want to have a survey so strong that the federal government, which has the ultimate say, says you can never do this. You can’t build a road there because it’s too special.”

Their survey will be conducted from Tuesday through Thursday.
