Happy International Women’s Day to Logan City and the Scenic Rim, today is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.
Marked annually on March 8, International Women’s Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year to:
- celebrate women’s achievements
- raise awareness about women’s equality
- lobby for accelerated gender parity
- fundraise for female-focused charities
International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century with the first gathering held in 1911.
This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge. According to the International Women’s Day website, ‘a challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day’.
“We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.
“From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”
Cheryl Jowitt, founder and managing director of Rebel Connect PL and My News Feed at Rebel Digital, said she believed it is important for International Women’s Day to be highlighted.
“It’s important that International Women’s day is highlighted as it raises awareness through the sharing of stories of success,” she said.
“Hopefully International Women’s day not only inspires young women coming into the workforce but on this day, we can share stories that encourage more women to aspire to leadership roles and entrepreneurial ventures in Logan.
“Breaking down gender stereotypes is important, not just in the workforce. In most cases gender stereotypes are a result of a person’s upbringing or background.
“Girls need to be educated from an early age that they can be doctors, mechanics, engineers – whatever career path they choose to follow. Men should have that same opportunity.
“I have been excited by recent changes in our Government and education sector that encourages more women and girls to follow STEM subjects at school as this is a traditionally male dominated industry.
“We’ve still got a long way to go to break down that glass ceiling in the corporate world and for some it can’t happen fast enough. We’re now seeing more women represented in traditionally male dominated industries but still the percentages are very low.”
There’s a variety of International Women’s Day events in Logan City and the Scenic Rim, including the Pretty in Pink charity night.
