Heroic man killed protecting pregnant partner

A father has broken down in tears after losing his son in a caravan fire at Logan Central, describing him as a hero.

Blake Whell and Tomeka Willis were asleep in the caravan in the driveway of a relative’s home, when an e-scooter charger reportedly caught alight, sparking the fire.

Emergency services were called to the Wilbur Street address around 11 o’clock last night, to find the caravan well alight.

Mr Whell and Ms Willis, who is heavily pregnant, were transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, with critical burns to their bodies.

After suffering 95 per-cent burns to his body, Mr Whell’s family made the heartbreaking decision to switch off his life support.

At last report, it was understood that Ms Willis, who was taken to hospital in a critical condition, is set to undergo an emergency caesarean today.

Lloyd Bickle says his son was burnt trying to protect his pregnant partner from the flames.

Mr Bickle urged people to be cautious of E-Scooters.

“Beware of these scooters, they’re dangerous.”

Mr Bickle also pleaded with the community to assist with funeral costs.

“I’m asking anybody out there to help me with his funeral, please I beg you.”

Neighbour Dennis Birt saw it all unfold over his fence.

“I saw the caravan lit up in flames, so I told someone to call Triple Zero.

“We saw the lady walking around and she was burnt.

“The neighbour across the road was washing her, trying to keep her cool.

“It was pretty traumatic for my kids to see.

“My thoughts are with everyone next door.”

Funds to assist with funeral costs can be donated through the Logan House Fire Support Network website.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
