Daisy Hill artist Richard Blundell has returned to the Logan Council art gallery for his fifth solo exhibition to mark 50 years living and painting in Logan City.

Mr Blundell said his exhibition Gathering Gold was a commemorative exhibition.

“The starting point for Gathering Gold is 1969 at 12 Tolverne Street, Rochedale South when I moved into a newly completed house with my then wife and our newborn son Christopher,” he said.

“Thirty one years later, I built a new house and studio at Springwood Road, Daisy Hill where my current wife and I continue to live.

“Gathering Gold is inspired by daily creative rituals, being sensitive and alert to memories, and hope for experiences set against planned and chance encounters in the material world today.”

Mr Blundell said he put in a proposal to Logan City Council through the art gallery and has spent the last twelve months preparing for the exhibition.

“I see these kinds of exhibitions as a conversation with my community,” he said.

“I get to meet lots of people that are in my community that I don’t know from a bar of soap but I have bizarre conversations with people at the exhibitions.

“It actually helps me to understand my own work…people often tell me strange things about my artwork that I myself wouldn’t have seen.”

Mr Blundell said he was thankful to Logan City Council.

“They have a very supportive set of programs for local creatives,” he said.

“They provide a really interesting and rewarding set of opportunities for creative people and for the community.”

Mr Blundell is also an alumnus and retired academic of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, where he worked for 44 years. He was the deputy director (Gold Coast) for a decade and is a fellow of the Design Institute of Australia.

His exhibition Gathering Gold is part of Logan treasures: art, craft and design pop-up store which opened Friday.

Mr Blundell will be at the gallery tonight to discuss his works.

Because of COVID-19 a staggered opening will be held. Limited numbers of visitors can attend 30-minute sessions at 5pm, 5:45pm or 6:30pm tonight (December 4). Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 3412 5519.
