Logan City Council is raising awareness and funds for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, and to get involved all you need to do is dust off your best frock.
Councillor Natalie Willcocks said Frocktober has been empowering women for over thirteen years.
“Participants show their support by wearing their favourite dresses for a day, a week or for the whole month. And Frockers are encouraged to wear their favourite frocks for 8 hours and take photos and post to social media,” she said.
“The 8 hour reference is to mark that sadly, one Australian woman loses her life to ovarian cancer every 8 hours.
“Ovarian Cancer is known as the silent killer as the symptoms associated with the disease are vague and easily mistaken for common women’s health issues.
“Each year about 1800 Australian Women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the average age of 64.
“Ovarian Cancer has a lower survival rate than both breast cancer at 91% and Cervical Cancer at 74%.
“The 5 year survival rate for all women diagnosed with ovarian cancer is only 46%.
“Women who are diagnosed in the advanced stages of the disease, the majority of cases, only have a 29% five year survival rate.
“And unlike other cancers there is no early detection test for ovarian cancer.”
Cr Willcocks said she is challenging the ladies of Logan to take the 8 hour Frocktober challenge.
“Wear your dress with pride and take photos and share on social media with the hashtag frocktober and raise some much needed funds,” she said.
“Next Wednesday on October 28, here in Council offices, we are encouraging the ladies to participate.
“My own pledge is to wear a frock each day that I am in the office until October 31 and my goal is to fundraise $1000 for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.
“I will personally contribute $100 to get my #frocktober challenge started, and If I raise $1000 I will wear my wedding dress into Council.”
