According to Logan City Councillor Karen Murphy International Women’s Day is ‘the celebration of the success and achievements by women’.

“It is incredibly important that we can celebrate our achievements and showcase our ability to be the driving force of change in our community,” Cr Murphy said.

“I will be attending several International Women’s Day events across the City of Logan. On International Women’s Day, I will be attending the Soroptimist Beenleigh International Women’s Day Breakfast at Club Beenleigh.

“I am also guest speaker at the Bethania Community Centre’s event on March 9. I think it’s great that so many organisations in the City Logan are getting behind the day and hosting celebrations.

“Women should be able to express our views on the relevant issues for our community and country.

“Women need to have the same opportunities to be the driving force for change in the community.”

Cr Murphy said a dear friend and mentor of hers, gave her the best advice.

“One of my great mentors who was a trailblazer in the Beenleigh community, the late Moya McKeon OAM, told me that if you’re sitting still, you’re not doing anything,” she said.

“You’ll have to face many challenges, but you need to just keep going with the journey.

“Moya was a mentor and strong influence in my life.”

When asked her advice for young women and girls in Logan City, Cr Murphy said it’s all about learning.

“I would say knowledge is key – keep learning,” she said.

“Don’t be afraid to have a go but make sure you look after yourself, both mentally and physically.

“Keep a routine and don’t forget to exercise, eat well, and rest so you can be the best you.

“It’s also important to have a mentor and give back, whether through volunteering or donating to important causes.

“Giving back is extremely rewarding. This is the same advice I would give to any young person looking to make a difference in our community.”
