According to Logan City Councillor Teresa Lane International Women’s Day is about ‘acknowledging the struggle that women have around the globe to be treated as equals’.
“No bra burning or ranting – just supporting United Nations projects that aid women in reaching a good standard of living and safety, the right to provide for their family and choose their own path in life,” Cr Lane said.
Cr Lane said she has been invited to many Logan City International Women’s Day events and will be donating to the UN program that this year is seeking to bring women vendors to the fore in developing countries.
She said it’s important to see women in leadership positions, especially in Logan City.
“People bring a different perspective to any conversation, policy or role,” Cr Lane said.
“Men bring stability, age brings differing ideas and knowledge, and youth brings enthusiasm and energy. Women bring it all.
“Having a capable woman in leadership is amazing to watch. Our Premier, former Prime Minister and New Zealand’s two female prime ministers all showed strength, wisdom and compassion that was genuine.”
Cr Lane said the best advice she’d received from another woman was to be herself.
“Always be you, stand up for others, be a voice of strength, compassion and community, always apologise when you are wrong and smile quietly when you get it right,” she said.
“And if you can’t be a supermodel – be a role model.”
Cr Lane said if there are any young women or girls in Logan City who are looking for a mentor, she’s here to help.
“Invite me for a cuppa or cold drink and let’s talk ideas. Women love supporting other people’s aims, ideas and excitement,” she said.
“Women in leadership often make time to mentor someone, to be a sounding board and a steady hand; we just don’t advertise it.”
