Loganlea Community Spirit Awards nominations are now open

2020 has been a difficult and unusual year for many, but despite this, the Logan City community has come together, helping others where they can.

For this reason, the Loganlea Community Centre wants to recognise those community members through the Community Spirit Awards.

Loganlea Community Centre Manager, Lindel Walters, came up with the idea for the award to help recognise the unsung heroes within the community.

“As you know it’s been a tough year all round,” Mrs Walters said. “We had the fires early in the year, then we had COVID.

“All the firies, the doctors and the nurses received accolades, and they deserve those.

“But there are a lot of people in the community, where people were dropping food to the firies, and during COVID there’ve been people out and about in the community who have been helping and haven’t done it before.

“People are doing far more than they’ve ever done, and I just thought, ‘wouldn’t it be nice if we recognised some of them too?”

The five categories for the awards are the Ina Pruis Award for Senior Citizens, MyHorizon Adult Award 18+, Loganlea Community Centre Youth Award 12 to 18 Years, IGA Loganlea Award for Juniors 5 to 12 Years, and Parkinson’s Queensland Award for Community Organisation.

In terms of standout nominees so far, Mrs Walters says there are many people in the community who have been nominated, but she is encouraging others to come forward.

“One of the nominees put forward so far are Mission Possible Volunteers,” Mrs Walters said. “I think they are outstanding all the time, but during COVID…Mission Possible were not only making masks, but surgical caps for the surgeons at the hospital.”

Mrs Walters said Substation 33, an electronic waste recycling centre providing training and employment opportunities through the recycling of electronic waste, was also another nominee.

“So many people in the community have come out and helped, so let’s find out who you are, let’s recognise you,” Mrs Walters said.

“People have been amazing. It’s really shown how wonderful the community in Logan is.”

Nominees must live in Logan City, and nominations close Friday, November 20th.

“Send those nominations in,” Mrs Walters said. “If they can’t find them, ring me, or come into the centre. I know there’s a lot of youth in the area doing [good things], so come on people, tell us who your kids are, or your neighbours…or even littlies. We want to recognise you and say thank you.”

All nominees will be invited to the presentation of the awards with a special event held at Loganlea Community Centre on Saturday 5th December 2020.
