Scenic Rim councillor tests positive for COVID

A Scenic Rim councillor, who has not received a COVID-19 vaccine, has tested positive for the virus this week.

Councillor Jeff McConnell took to social media to confirm that he had tested positive for the virus, after taking a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) yesterday.

Councillor McConnell has previously spoken out against the vaccine mandate imposed by the State Government.

It comes as the Scenic Rim reported 80 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, to record a total of 716 cases in the region.

Councillor McConnell says he began developing symptoms on Monday.

“My journey with COVID-19 so far commenced with a sore throat and a cough on Monday.

It developed throughout the day and overnight to include fatigue and muscle soreness with the cough worsening.

“I took a RAT on Tuesday, that returned a negative result.

“I have heard stories of negative tests being returned soon after the development of symptoms, to have positive test results the next day.

“Due to this, I opted to link into the Ordinary Meeting of the Scenic Rim Regional Council remotely conscious of infection spread and the advice of Queensland Health.

“I have since continued to display flu like symptoms and today, following another RAT test, have tested positive.

“I am now isolating at home with my family in accordance with Health Directives and am managing my symptoms effectively.

“I am certainly not alone in this diagnosis and hope that everyone continues to take all the necessary and recommended preventative measures and abide by the Health Directives to assist in protecting all members of our community.

“If you or your loved ones are dealing with COVID-19, I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery.”

Scenic Rim Regional Council confirmed in this week’s Ordinary Meeting, that while it has received response from the State Government regarding an appeal for a review of COVID-19 restrictions, it’s unable to be made publicly available at this time.
