Sign on day beckons for women’s hockey in Logan

If you are a woman looking to get involved in a hockey club in Logan this season, the Logan Hockey Club is the perfect fit for you.

With registrations open until January 30th, it’s the perfect time to get involved with the team, which is involved in Division 4 of the Gold Coast Hockey Competition at Labrador

The team, based out of Meakin Park in Slacks Creek  is purely social and is a great fit for families, with junior and senior grass competitions opening up in April.

Spokesperson Courtney says the club has been trying to circumvent travel issues by training locally in a creative way.

“We’re in the process of trying to negotiate some options for training that are more locally based, because we’ve always had to travel to a turf.

“We’ve gotten a bit creative by using astroturf tennis courts to train. We’re just trying to find somewhere more local because it’s just too hard trying to get them to train down the Coast during the week.

“I should clarify, what hockey players call ‘turf’ is synthetic, or astroturf and its water-based, like what Olympic hockey is on. It’s smooth and spongy and full of water.”

She says that LHC focuses on the social side of the game

“Our women’s team is in Division 4, it’s open to beginners, and it’s women and girls, so we can have players 14 years and up.

“The matches are usually either at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre at Labrador, or there’s one field at Runaway Bay.

“Senior women’s turf is 625, and ten game casual option for 350.

For those intimidated by the fee, Logan Hockey Club’s grass team plays in the Redlands Hockey competition, and charges around $200 per player.

That season is in April, and training will start in March.

Courtney says hockey is a great sport for the family, using an example that is very close to home

“It’s about fun, it’s about fitness, we’re a very family friendly club, and we’re affordable.

“It’s really a sport the whole family can play.

“We’ve got families where the whole family does play, you can play the juniors all morning, and the seniors in the afternoon.

“We’ve got three kids, three junior fixtures in the morning, and me and my husband play in the afternoon.
