Valentine’s Day celebrations around Logan City

Love is in the air this weekend for Logan locals, as venues around the city prepare for the special day.

Council is also urging residents to support local businesses for those celebrating Valentine’s Day in the City.

A Logan City Council spokesperson said to buy local from florists including Flower Hub at Slacks Creek which is one of the largest online flower markets in South East Queensland, Unveiling Poppy in Daisy Hill or the Chatswood Hill Florist in Springwood, to name a few.

“Gifts can be found at the Logan Art Gallery store, which stocks locally made contemporary arts and crafts including jewellery, ceramics, woods, prints, textiles, leather goods, handmade books, bags, cards and more.

“For those whose Valentine may have a sweet tooth, consider local producers, including Poppy’s Chocolates in Beenleigh, Sooo Sweet in Slacks Creek and the Devon Pixies tea room in Logan Village.”

You can also take your loved one for a picnic at one of the City of Logan’s beautiful 942 parks, many with free barbecue and picnic facilities.

Locals will also have the pleasure of witnessing all three of the City’s light towers – Jacaranda Tower, Telfer Street Tower and Wineglass Water Tower – lit up specially for Valentine’s Day on Feb 14. So grab your picnic basket and rug, and head to the towers for an enjoyable, serene evening with loved ones.

Residents can also start gearing up for the first live Eats Beats event in almost 12 months on February 26 and will be a celebration of Valentine’s Day.

Pandemic restrictions curtailed much of the Eats Beats program last year.

Although the first Eats Beats of 2021 is not on Valentine’s Day as such, attendees are encouraged to bring their valentine and keep the romance going.

The ‘Love is in the Air’ themed event is at the Logan River Parklands in Beenleigh from 4:30pm. It will feature live music, as well as more than 20 food trucks. COVID-Safe guidelines will be in place, with attendees required to scan a QR Code on arrival and register their contact details. Social distancing and hand sanitisation will also be encouraged. More information on the event is available on the Eats Beats Facebook page.

Arts and Craft Markets at the Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum

The Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum is excited to be holding an Arts and Craft Markets day this Saturday 13th from 7am to 12:30pm.

The weekend markets will hold roughly 90 stalls that will be selling crafts, jewellery, plants, candles, hood products, blankets, bags, macrame, resin boards, jams and sauces, fashion, dogs and pet products, glassware, popcorn, aromatherapy, and kids activities.

“Kids activities include shetland pony rides, which is always very popular, and we have dressed up staff members as clowns, face painting, and other fun things to keep kids happy,” Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum spokesperson Madeleine Green said. “The village is still open during market days, as is the tin cup cafe, which has a fantastic menu – their new apple crumble is pretty amazing.”

The village is composed of roughly 20 heritage buildings that date from the 1860s onward, and each building is filled with original items related to Beenleigh and surrounding areas that have been either gifted or donated by members of the public.

Ms Green says the site contains buildings and items of great significance to the Beenleigh area, such as St George’s Anglican Church, Council Chambers, Wilke’s General Store, Fire Engine Shed, Pimpama Dairy, Coomera Lockup, Beenleigh Post Office, Rural School, Railway Museum and Tin Cup Café, Print Museum, and an array of historical cottages and homes from different time periods.

“The Beenleigh Historical Village and Museum is a not-for-profit organisation largely coordinated off of the hard work and dedication of a large team of volunteers, and we rely on the generosity of local businesses and the greater community to help us in our efforts to protect Beenleigh’s heritage,” she said. “We are always on the lookout for additional volunteers willing to join our team and share their love of history.”

Market entry is a gold coin donation which will go towards supplies, volunteers and collections items to help collections revamp displays and better conserve the site.
