According to the Transport Workers Union, the attack on a bus driver in Logan City this morning was a despicable act, ‘perpetrated by the lowest of the low’.

Peter Biagini, the Queensland Branch Secretary of Transport Workers Union of Australia, said more needs to be done.

“For many years, the TWU has campaigned for improved security on bus services across Queensland in the wake of other attacks on bus drivers across Queensland – in particular the death of Manmeet Sharma in 2016,” he said.

“While safety for drivers has come a long way, there is obviously still more to be done.

“Bus drivers deserve to be respected and feel safe in their workplace, and violent attacks on drivers have no place in our society.”

Mr Biagini said the TWU is in contact with the driver after this incident, and offering all the support at our disposal.

“While the police investigation is ongoing, the TWU looks forward to seeing the offender prosecuted under the full force of the law,” he said.

The TWU will be working with TransLink, Bus Operators, and the Queensland Government to ensure bus drivers are safe at work moving forward.

The TWU is calling for an urgent meeting of the Bus Safety Forum in order to continue to progress bus driver safety in Queensland.

7 News reporter Emily Arnold was on the scene after the attack and spoke with My News Feed about the incident.

“The bus was in motion and the driver managed to keep control of the vehicle” she said.

“He brought the bus to a stop and then called emergency services” according to the 7 news reporter.
