Flash flooding traps Scenic Rim councillors

The Scenic Rim has copped its fair share of heavy rain and flash flooding, and while Mayor Greg Christensen said it’s not bad enough to flood local homes, it was bad enough to close roads and prevent councillors from attending the monthly meeting.

At today’s (Tuesday March 23) ordinary monthly Council meeting Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen addressed how the heavy rain and flash flooding has affected the area and the Council meeting.

Over the weekend North Tamborine was among the hardest hit, copping 263mm in 24 hours, and roads are closed at Beaudesert, Rathdowney, Cainable, and Tabragalba.

Mayor Christensen says the rain is supposed to get heavier and will create a heightened risk because the rivers are now all full.

He said he completely understood why some councillors had to dial in online, and why one councillor was unable to attend at all.

“Because of weather events we have two councillors who are with us via dial in today, Councillor West and Councillor McInnes,” Mayor Christensen said.

“And we have an apology from Councillor Swansborough who was going to dial in but is unfortunately dealing with some water challenges at his property.”

To wrap up the council meeting, Mayor Christensen said in the past six or so hours the Scenic Rim waterways had risen significantly.

“We are still not in a position where we are at high risk of inundation of households,” he said.

“But it is supposed to get heavy throughout the afternoon and this will create a heightened risk because the rivers are now all full.”

Mayor Christensen also said the Local Disaster Management Group would be meeting after the council meeting to discuss the ongoing handling of the region’s flash flooding.
