Logan locals turning to fresh, local produce

Global Food Markets fresh produce is some of the city’s best

Logan City locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to an array of fresh produce on offer around the city.

One spot offering a range if fresh and local produce is The Global Food Markets in Woodridge, a popular market attracting hundreds each weekend, and has even attracted the attention of British celebrity chef, Ainsley Harriott in recent years.

Market Manager, Dean Khieu from The Global Food Markets says the markets are quite unique as they have a lot of fresh produce not available in your local supermarket, such as okra, bitter melon, water spinach, moqua, taro and yu choy.

“All this fresh produce comes straight from the farmer’s land and is harvested the day before to ensure its freshness every Sunday,” Mr Khieu says.

“Here at our markets is where you find those unique fresh produce to make those Asian, African, European or Islander dishes.

“Our stall holders are always more than happy to explain how to use certain fresh produce in a dish or how to cook one, and if you don’t feel like cooking we have an ethnic street food section with food from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma, New Zealand, Africa and more.

“It is highly recommended to come early in the morning for the freshest produce, but during late morning you will see lots of specials as stallholders clear their produce.”

Since its opening in 2005, The Global Food Markets, which started with only five Cambodian and Islander farmers bringing their fresh produce to sell on Croydon Road every Sunday, has expanded to over 100 stall holders and holds a reputation for fresh produce at affordable prices.

Using sustainable, natural and organic techniques from generations of beekeepers, Bee All Natural Honey produces high quality and exceptional tasting honey.

“We’ve got a very long list of products, like vanilla-infused honey that can be used for deserts,” Mr Roebig says.

“One of my favourites is the chilli honey, we’ve also got a sedate version of it too, it’s absolutely beautiful with fresh prawns and lime.”

Mr Roebig says buying local produce is a great way to support the local community.

“By buying locally, you’re supporting people in the community and in turn their families,” he says.

“Without that support they don’t survive.”
