Flood evacuations ordered for parts of Beaudesert

  • Rod Stephen is a former television journalist and has worked as Foreign Editor for the Seven Network, Australian Bureau Chief for TV3 New Zealand, UK correspondent for Seven and ABC radio and as a producer for Reuters TV in London as well as SBS in Sydney and Melbourne before returning to Brisbane to work at 4BC.

Householders in some parts of Beaudesert have been ordered to evacuate as the Logan River reached major flood levels, beyond 12.22 metres.

Local area emergency services were sending text messages to warn residents around Glen Eagle to reach higher ground.

The text message told residents to “secure their belongings, warn their neighbours and move to higher ground.”

The Weather Bureau says river levels have started to generally ease across the upper reaches of the Logan and Albert River catchments

However,  Further downstream river rises continue as upstream floodwaters arrive during the morning.

The Weather Bureau’s Peter Claasen says the Logan River will still rise, particularly at Waterford, Parklands and Mclean Bridge.

” Right across the Logan River catchments we’re seeing major flood levels being reached at the moment but that water will slow down and cause some more river rises across the Logan Rover catchments later today”.

Forecasters say the threat of heavy rain has cleared however we will still see isolated showers for the rest of today,

North Tamborine was among the hardest hit, copping 263mm in 24 hours.

Mayor Greg Christensen says  council workers are doing everything they can to help with the clean ups.

“Óur staff have been working diligently. This morning I witnessed a skeleton crew quietly clearing land slips on TamborineMountain Road at 4 o’çlock  in the morning, then successfully clearing the blocked drain at Curtis Falls. Quite skilled operators I would say”.
