Border bubble bursts exemptions

There’s confusion among border towns following a meeting between the Premier and Mayors, where they told of changes to the travel bubble.

This will impact those who live or work in border communities across the Darling Downs and northern New South Walaes.

Teachers who live and work on either side, can no longer cross over.

The Queensland State Government has revised its definition of what’s considered an essential worker and who can cross over.

Mayors along the border were notified of the changes on Thursday afternoon.

Effective immediately  they were told teachers, childcare workers, hospitality workers and some tradies had been taken off the list.

It’s left dozens of schools in the lurch, with a lot of teachers living on one side, but working on the other.

Tighter restrictions could be introduced today, with reports New South Wales could potentially go into a statewide lockdown.

Neither the Premier’s office nor Queensland Health are willing to provide clarity on the new directive.

Meantime,  Queensland officials are planning to increase the number of available Covid jabs in  border communities, particularly in southern and western Queensland.

It follows increased fears that the CoronaVirus is quickly spreading through regional New South Wales.

A plea has already gone out to Queensland’s border communities NOT to cross over into New South Wales.

Yesterday, the Premier spoke at length with various Mayors on the Queensland side of the border about boosting their vaccination programs… and follows the 63 percent confirmed vaccination figure from Goondiwindi.

Chief Health Officer Doctor Jeannette Young says it’s important to ensure regional Queensland is totally protected
