Rankin MP: Labor to fix apprenticeship failure

A Logan City based federal MP has accused the Morrison Government of causing cutbacks in local apprenticeship schemes.

The member for Rankin Jim Chalmers has made the comment,  ahead of National Skills Week, due to begin in just over a week.

Mr Chalmers says the Coalition’s cuts  mean the local community has 1,069 fewer apprentices.

“That 36% drop is absolutely devastating for people who want to get ahead and set themselves up with skills for the future.

“An apprenticeship isn’t just a qualification, it’s a ticket to a better life.

“Scott Morrison should be making it easier for people in our community to get ahead but the LNP is holding people back and leaving them behind”.

Mr Chalmers says when one in four Australian businesses are experiencing skills shortages the Morrison Government has ripped 25,000 apprenticeships (25% drop) from Queensland and 115,000 apprenticeships (27% drop) across Australia.

He says the community wants and needs to play a bigger role in Australia recovering from the recession and damaging lockdowns caused by Scott Morrison’s failures on vaccines and quarantine.

By comparison, Mr Chalmers has unveiled Labor’s plan for upskilling.

“Australian Skills Guarantee – on every major work site receiving Federal Government funding, one in 10 workers employed will be an apprentice, a trainee or cadet.

The Labor plan includes new energy apprenticeships – $100 million to support 10,000 New Energy Apprenticeships, which will benefit our community.
