Woman critical in hospital after crash following police pursuit

A Wilsonton Heights woman is in a critical condition after the man she was driving with led police on a pursuit along the Warrego Highway before crashing into an unsuspecting motorist, who is also from Toowoomba.

The 29-year-old driver has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving, evading and obstructing police following a major traffic incident that spanned Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich on Saturday afternoon.

Police allege the man was driving a white Mazda station wagon bearing false registration plates when he was observed driving erratically and dangerously, including weaving in and out of traffic and mounting footpaths in Brisbane and Logan.

Polair monitored the vehicle where it was allegedly observed travelling at speed on the wrong side of the Warrego Highway at Karalee.

The man failed to stop when directed by police so they deployed road spikes and deflated his tyres.

The station wagon collided with another vehicle, a Dodge Ram, at Karalee, causing it to roll several times before the Mazda caught fire.

Officers put the fire out and provided assistance to the occupants until emergency services arrived.

The occupant from the Dodge, a 49-year-old Glenvale man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The driver of the Mazda was taken to Ipswich Hospital and later discharged.

His passenger, a 37-year-old Wilsonton Heights woman, was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital and remains in a critical condition.

The man was refused police bail and will appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court on Monday

Police are appealing for witnesses who saw or have dashcam vision of the white Mazda station wagon, Queensland registration 036VSQ to come forward.

If you can help their investigation phone Policelink on 131 444.
