The Western Downs township of Chinchilla is breathing a sigh of relief after flood waters from Charleys Creek started receding this morning.
Businesses owners sanbagged their properties last night to prevent inundation.
Mayor Paul McVeigh says that work stopped water getting into the businesses.
It’s stopped raining over the Western Downs but showers may return tomorrow.
Mr McVeigh says the local catchments are now saturated and any more rain will cause further flooding.
“While it’s great to have such beautiful rain, the impact of floodwaters is certainly one we’re concerned about.”
He’s particularly concerned about what will happen to Chinchilla’s farmers once floodwaters from the Condamine River reach the area.
Meanwhile, floodwaters that inundated Inglewood earlier this week are due to peak in the border town of Goondiwindi tomorrow
The Macintyre River is expected to reach 10.7 metres- a level just above the 2011 floods.
The Goondiwindi Regional Council says the levee won’t be breached at that level, but the local disaster management group is planning for the worst
