Providing a safe haven for close to 10,000 stray and homeless animals every year, Animal Welfare League Queensland in Beenleigh is an organisation that are dedicated to serving the animals of our community.

Today, My News Feed was lucky enough to be given a tour of the centre by Max Burndred who has been with the AWLQ since July 2011, and before that, she spent 9 years with the RSPCA in New Zealand.

Max explained the process when people surrender dogs.

“We do a surrender process with the client, taking as much information about the animal as possible, both good and bad,” she says.

“We ask for as much medical information they have got from their vets, and we give them a day or so to settle, then we do a behaviour assessment, and after that we book their vet treatments, whether that’s vaccinations, worming, or whether they need to be spayed…and then they are put up for adoption.”

Max says a lot of people still think AWLQ works similar to the old, traditional pounds, which she says in untrue.

“Some people think that…if they’re not re-homed in a certain length of time they are euthanised but that’s not the case at all, whether they’ve been here a year, a month or a week, we find them a home,” Max says.

Melinda Phipps, AWLQ State Rehoming Manager says this is achieved by not turning away animals who are suffering and not euthanising animals because they are old or require treatment.

“AWLQ’s Beenleigh Animal Rehoming Centre saves more lives because of our promise – to never euthanise a healthy, sociable or treatable animal in our care. In addition, we are committed to keeping pets and families together by providing lifesaving support so animals are never unnecessarily euthanised or surrendered.
