Eagleby wetlands deserve protection: ACF

The Australian Conservation Foundation has raised awareness of the Eagleby wetlands in Logan City as an amazing place that is worth celebrating and protecting.

As world wetlands day is marked around the globe, the foundation said the Eagleby wetlands are significant because 19 of the 24 Australian raptor species utilise the area.

ACF nature campaigner Tarquin Moon has told MyNewsFeed that there are also 300 native bird species there, which makes it an important place to be protected by the community.

“Wetlands all over the world are constantly under pressure, so places like the Eagleby wetlands really do need local people to be champions of them because they are such special places,” she said.

“World wetlands day marks 50 years since the convention on wetlands of international importance was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.

“That convention is about making governments across the world, and also locals, aware of just how important wetlands are. At the local level, like the Eagleby wetlands, those systems are really important too, so it is about raising awareness and locals being champions of those places.”

Ms Moon added that wetlands improve the quality of water that goes into rivers, they provide a buffer against storms and flooding, they are important cultural heritage sites and vital breeding and feeding grounds for birds, fish and other animals.
