Aim for balance with flood mapping

Logan City Council will strive to keep future housing affordability in mind, when it comes to updating its flood modelling data.

Council endorsed that the recommended Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) to be applied to the climate change scenarios within Logan City Council’s flood studies in this week’s Ordinary Meeting.

The original motion was included in the minutes of the City Infrastructure Committee Meeting, which was moved by Councillor Teresa Lane, seconded by Councillor Lisa Bradley and was carried unanimously.

Prior to the endorsement, Councillor Jacob Heremaia aired his concerns that changes to flood mapping will impact housing affordability in the area.

“Flood mapping affects housing supply and right now our State is in the midst of a housing affordability crisis.

“There are concerns with flood mapping discussions because by limiting land supply, many believe that this may be a backward step and it will work against our shared goal of affordable housing.”

Deputy Mayor Jon Raven says that Council has a responsibility to provide safe housing for the community.

“If we don’t know where the flood plain is, if we’re not using the best evidence, not using the best model to understand exactly where the flooding is, and how severe it will be, then taking practical measures, to make sure that we are not unnecessarily limiting land supply, that we’re only doing what is necessary and what is prudent, then I don’t think we are serving our community well.

“We want there to be safe housing, secure housing, that won’t be washed away when a one-in-one hundred year flood comes.”
