Logan City locals congregated at the Beenleigh RSL memorial to pay their respects for Remembrance Day.

Beenleigh RSL president David Draper said they had over 80 residents attend the service.

“Remembrance Day is the second largest event that we have with ANZAC Day being the largest,” he said.

“We lost ten percent of our male population so we have to get together to remember them.

“Even though it’s not a public holiday we still always hold a service.”

This year because of COVID restrictions the Beenleigh service was moved from the Creek St Beenleigh Memorial to the Beenleigh RSL Memorial.

“If we had the service there (Creek St Beenleigh Memorial) we wouldn’t have been allowed to have more than 40 people,” Mr Draper said.

“We had about 90 people attend the service today and I think that’s pretty good. Especially since most people are back at work now and the local schools all have their own services.”

Mr Draper said Remembrance Day is still relevant to Australians and that it should be commemorated.

“People need to remember to remember,” he said.

“It’s because of them that we’ve got Australia, the way it is now.

“A lot of people are starting to forget about it and we should not be forgetting about it.

“We’ve still got troops overseas in over 30 different countries at the moment doing peacekeeping work.

“That’s what the RSL here is for. All of our profits go straight into welfare to help these people.”
