Millions of dollars’ worth of insurance claims have been made across Queensland after heavy rainfall and flooding ravaged the Gold Coast, Logan and Scenic Rim regions.

The Insurance Council of Australia has said policyholders from south-east Queensland have already lodged 2,500 claims and many more are expected.

The Gold Coast was the hardest hit region and some areas such as Springbrook and Mount Tamborine were drenched by more than 400 millimetres of rain over two days.

RACQ spokeswoman Kirsty Clinton said the insurer had received 822 claims  for this rain event. “The majority of those , 718 were for damaged property. So, homes and contents, and the other 104 were for damage to cars”.

However, most of the claims have come from the Gold Coast but there have also been some from Logan City.

“We have seen about 20 claims from Beenleigh and surrounds. We have seen a couple from Logan but it’s not as high on the list as Beenleigh”

Logan City Council is assessing dozens of damaged roads, however the full damage would not be known until the Logan River recedes.

Disaster assistance is available to Gold Coast, Logan and Scenic Rim councils through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, after the extreme weather created landslips and damage to roads.
