Goondiwindi saved from flooding by levee

Goondiwindi has avoided any flooding today because the levee has again protected the town from the swollen Macintyre River which is currently peaking at below 10.5 metres.

Council staff will continue monitoring the peak around the clock until it passes.

All available resources are being used to assess and repair road damage across the region and the highway  to and from Goondiwindi is expected to be open early next week.

The Local Disaster Management Group will continue to closely monitor the situation across the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the following information for properties west of Goondiwindi.

Weir River to Giddi Giddi South – Major flooding is rising between Gunn Bridge and Giddi Giddi South. Moderate flooding is continuing to slowly ease along Wyaga and Yarrill Creeks.

Weir River downstream of Giddi Giddi South – Minor to major flood levels are rising along the lower Weir River between Surrey and Mascot.  The Weir River at Talwood was at 3.42 metres and rising at 6:00 pm Friday, with minor flooding. The Weir River at Talwood is likely to reach the major flood level (4.00 m) during Monday.

Some rural properties around the Yarrill Creek area have reported the highest water on record.

Over the weekend Council will also  continue supporting recovery efforts in Inglewood.
