Forde MP Bert Van Manen has welcomed the Morrison Government’s Fisheries Habitat Restoration Program which he says will deliver $300,000 to the Fishers for Fish Habitat in the Logan-Albert Rivers project, a collaborative and coordinated effort to restore the once-thriving fish populations of these iconic Southeast Queensland rivers.
The program delivers on the government’s commitment to work with fishing clubs to restore marine and estuarine habitats.
The Liberal Nationals recognise that our fishers are on the frontline when it comes to marine conservation and habitat protection, and we will continue to support them in their fisheries management efforts
Some of the activities to be undertaken under this project include:
· Riedel Park establishment and monitoring of fisher access tracks and boardwalk through saltmarsh / mangrove ecosystems, and installation of in-stream structures (fish hotels /snags)
· Scrubby Creek installation of habitat structures, large woody snags and riparian vegetation
· Logan River Parklands bank stabilisation including large woody structures and revegetation
· Lower Albert oyster reef trial using gabion baskets filled with recycled shell installed in an approved location.
Also:
· OzFish will be creating a new chapter for the Albert and Logan Rivers. OzFish brings volunteer fishers together to protect and care for key fishing spots.
· Healthy environments are important not only for plants and wildlife, they are important for the happiness and well-being of communities.
The Forde MP said “healthy environments are important, not only for plants and wildlife, they are important for the happiness and well-being of communities. I’m really looking to seeing the success of this program.”
