Logan City Councillor Miriam Stemp, Division 10, called out the proposed development of the South Redland Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Logan River at this week’s ordinary council meeting.
She said major concerns had been raised by Logan residents regarding the proposed development of the South Redland Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant by Lendlease on the Logan River, as part of the Shoreline housing development.
“The proposed location for the treatment plant is in Logan City. However, it borders the Division 10 suburb of Carbrook,” Cr Stemp said.
“The site is also located close to prawn farms on the Logan River.
“This is not the only option available to the developer for wastewater treatment and that Logan City Council has no direct influence or decision-making powers with regard to this project.”
Cr Stemp said that in December last year, she wrote to Hon Dr Steven Miles and Hon Meaghan Scanlon in December 2020 to voice these community concerns.
She said the main community concerns were:
- Flooding
- The effect the wastewater discharge could have on local flora and fauna
- Effects to local properties nearby; prawn, fish, and livestock farms
- Poorer water quality
- Noise and odour
- Increased traffic
- Mosquitoes
- Property values
“In response I was advised that the assessment undertaken must consider matters such as those raised in my letter,” Cr Stemp said.
“But was also strongly encouraged to voice concerns as part of the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation assessment period which closes on March 5.
“As this development has clear implications for our Logan residents and the local environment I will continue to advocate in consultation with Mayor Power to the State Government for the consideration of all available treatment options and sites.
“As well as an expectation to preserve existing environmental values in the area, and mitigate any amenity impacts on existing Logan residents.”
Cr Bradley agreed with Cr Stemp.
“This development is of great concern for our waterways and for the Moreton Bay particularly,” Cr Bradley said.
“I’m very much in support of this.”
Cr Stemp formally tabled the letters she had sent during the Council meeting.
